Popeye Village — The Original Film Set at Anchor Bay

Nineteen wooden houses on a cove in the north of Malta, built for a film in 1979 and never taken down. Today Sweethaven is an open-air museum and one of the island's happiest family days out.

👥 A groups-only excursion

We arrange Popeye Village for groups only — schools, clubs, pilgrim and leisure groups travelling together. It is not sold seat by seat to individual travellers. Tell us your group size and dates and we will put a programme together.

In 1979 Paramount and Walt Disney needed a village that did not exist. Robert Altman found a cove on the north coast of Malta, and over seven months a construction crew built one: nineteen wooden buildings, with tree-trunk logs shipped from Holland and wood shingles from Canada, eight tons of nails and two thousand gallons of paint. Robin Williams played Popeye in his first leading film role, opposite Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl.

When the cameras stopped, the village stayed. Almost half a century later you can still walk in and out of the houses of Sweethaven, along the same crooked lanes, on the same wooden jetty over the same green water.

It is a proper day out rather than a photo stop. There are live animation shows, a cinema documentary about how the film was made, a Comic Museum, traditional games and mini-golf, and in the quieter months a silversmith at work and a scavenger hunt for the children.

In high summer the cove itself becomes the attraction: a water inflatables assault course, a floating sun deck, splash pools, sunbeds and umbrellas — all inside the entrance price, from 1 June to 30 September. Bring swimwear and towels in those months and you can easily stay the whole day.

And then there is Anchor Bay itself — a narrow inlet between high cliffs, with the painted houses stacked down one side of it. It is one of the most photographed places in Malta, and in the morning light it is at its best.

What is open, and when

High season — 1 June to 30 September

Open 09:30 to 18:00 daily. The film set, live animation shows, cinema documentary, mini-golf — plus the water inflatables assault course, the floating sun deck, splash pools, sunbeds and umbrellas. This is the season to bring swimwear.

Mid season — May, and 1 October to 5 November

Open 09:30 to 17:30 daily. The film set, live animation shows, mini-golf, traditional games, the cinema documentary and silversmith demonstrations. Warm enough to walk the whole village in comfort, without the summer crowds.

Low season — 6 November to 30 April

Open 09:30 to 17:00 daily. The film set, live animation shows, the Comic Museum, the cinema documentary, a scavenger hunt and family activities. Quiet, cool and by far the easiest time to photograph the place.

Good to know before you go

Mornings are better

Cooler, quieter, and the light falls on the painted houses rather than behind them.

It is built on a slope

The village runs down the side of the cove, so expect steps and inclines between the houses.

Swimwear from June to September

The water attractions are inside the entrance price in high season — bring towels and you can stay all day.
