Ġgantija Temples, Xagħra
Ġgantija stands on the Xagħra plateau and was raised in the Late Neolithic — older than Stonehenge, and older than the pyramids of Egypt by around a thousand years. Two temples, each with its own entrance, sit inside a single outer wall of coralline limestone, built by people who had neither metal tools nor the wheel. The blocks are so large that Gozitan tradition long insisted a giantess must have carried them into place; ġgant is Maltese for giant, and the name stuck. It is part of the Megalithic Temples of Malta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and your entrance ticket is included in the tour.
Ta' Pinu Basilica
Ta' Pinu stands alone in open fields in the west of Gozo, below the village of Għarb, its bell tower visible from much of the island. In 1883 a Gozitan woman, Karmni Grima, said she heard the Virgin's voice as she passed a small chapel on this spot. The Romanesque church that stands there today was built around that chapel between 1920 and 1932, and Pope Pius XI raised it to the rank of minor basilica in 1935. Inside, one corridor is lined with letters, photographs, crutches and children's clothing, left in thanksgiving by people whose prayers they believe were answered. Pope John Paul II came in 1990 and Pope Francis in 2022. It is Malta's national shrine to Our Lady, and for many Maltese and Gozitans the most important church on the islands.

None of the following is part of this excursion. Gozo holds more than a single day allows, so these are ideas for anyone coming back on their own, or staying a night or two on the island.
The feast season
Through the summer and into September, one village after another holds its festa. The church is dressed in damask and silver, the band clubs march, and the fireworks carry on well past midnight. Xagħra, Xewkija, Munxar and the parishes of Victoria each take their turn.
Two opera houses
For a town of Victoria's size, having one opera house would be surprising. It has two — the Aurora Theatre and the Astra Theatre — and both stage full productions through the autumn. Gozitans take this seriously, and the ticket prices surprise visitors.
Farming, food and Il-Premju
Gozo still farms, and it shows on the plate. Each August the Santa Marija agrarian fair, known on the island as Il-Premju, fills Victoria with livestock, produce and craftsmanship. Ġbejniet — the small Gozitan cheeselets — along with honey, olive oil and wine are all made here, and a younger generation of Gozitan cooks and producers is building on it.
Heritage beyond the Cittadella
Ġgantija and the Cittadella are stops on the tour. Victoria itself rewards a longer, slower visit of your own: Il-Ħaġar Museum sits on St George's Square, and small galleries around the town change their exhibitions through the year.
Gozo from the water
The island is small enough to see from the sea, and it looks like a different place from out there. Coastal caves, fishing trips and sunset sailings reach corners of the coastline no road goes near — and the inlets at Xlendi and Marsalforn are worth the trip on their own.
