Malta is small, but it is not walkable, and the best of it is spread out. The buses are cheap and they go almost everywhere, but they go the long way round, and on a hot afternoon with children and beach bags that matters.
With a car you can be at the Blue Grotto and Wied iż-Żurrieq before the crowds, at Mdina and Rabat in the middle of the day, and at Marsaxlokk on a Sunday morning while the fish market is still busy. Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa, Dingli Cliffs, the temples at Ħaġar Qim, Marfa and the ferry across to Gozo — all of them become easy, and you can stay for the sunset without watching the clock.
For a family or a couple of friends travelling together it usually works out well too: one car for the week instead of a separate excursion every day, with room for the beach kit, the shopping and the pushchair.

Driving in Malta — what to know
🇬🇧 We drive on the left
Same side as the UK, and roundabouts go clockwise. Take the first ten minutes gently and it becomes second nature.
50 in towns, 80 on the open road
Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h on the main roads, with cameras on the arterial routes.
Park outside the old towns
Mdina and Valletta are best walked. Leave the car outside the walls, and in the villages use the marked bays rather than the pavement.
Gozo by ferry
The car ferry crosses from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr — you drive on and drive off. No need to leave the car behind.
Nothing is far
The island is small; the whole of it is inside an hour. It is the narrow lanes that slow you down, not the distance.
